How to avoid being a victim of pickpocketing

The last thing you’d want to experience whilst you’re on that well-deserved vacation is to find you’ve been robbed of your belongings whilst taking a leisurely stroll. This is, unfortunately, the case with many of the tourists visiting locations considered must do’s as nothing attracts con men as an influx of tourists. It is to prevent such dampers on your trip that we at Travset have created a list of tips that might help you from being a target of these pickpockets.

1. Check what you take

The most important thing to remember is that the more valuables you have on your possession, the more you stand to lose. It is therefore wise to take the bare necessities such as some money to enjoy the city, a copy of your passport and one credit card with two-factor authentications activated.

2. Blend in

The easiest way to attract a pickpocket’s attention is to stand out amongst the crowd. We recommend dressing as the locals do and walking with confidence as that will deter any con men looking for gullible tourists.

3. Invest in a money belt

Money belts are useful as they hard to snatch and cut. Investing in one would be wise if traveling to an area notorious for pickpockets.

4. Watch what you touch

Be careful when you check yourself to ensure your belongings are safe as there are pickpockets watching your movements and the location of your wallet to part you from it.

5. Public displays of wealth

Avoid any money counting or rummaging through your purse while in public as that’s a beacon for pickpockets. There are also gangs of children who are extremely nimble on their feet who will snatch your money off your fingers.

6. Careful with friendly advice

Minimize any interaction with locals who warn you about pickpockets as they themselves might be one, waiting for an opportunity to observe the pockets in which your wallet is.

7. Be aware

Steer clear of any disturbances or commotions as these are surely a ruse to distract you, whilst your pockets are being emptied

8. Be ready

As great as the above precautions are sometimes the unthinkable happens and you do in fact become a victim of pickpocketing. In such cases, it is good to be prepared

Make sure you have the numbers of your credit companies to block all cards that were stolen. Visit the police and have the crime and your statement recorded. This will help with claiming for damage with your travel insurance. Have enough money to go back to your accommodation in a separate pocket.
