Top travel insurance myths you need to stop believing now

We like to think of ourselves as a minimalist bunch, traveling as light and low budget as possible in order to lengthen our stays in foreign lands that we love so much.

One thing we do not compromise on, however, is travel insurance, as the number of times it has helped us and backpackers we’ve encountered are numerous. It is for this reason that we encourage all those who follow us to do the same and try as we might dispel rumors on travel insurance.

These, however, do not provide compensation in instances of missed flights, stolen valuables or more serious issues such as an airlift during an accident.

2. I’m not going to do anything risky

You might not intend on doing anything risky, but accidents are not planned and tend to happen when you least expect it.

Medical treatment is expensive. Don’t jeopardize your financial future when a one-time investment in good travel insurance will do.

3. It’s expensive

Travel insurance is an expense, yes but a necessary one.

Most travel insurance covers, however, are very competitively priced, and affordable. Pick from a range of options and ensure your health and valuables are covered.

4. It’s hard to claim

With today’s technology, making a claim for your travel-related injuries or losses is a very easy affair.

All documents can be uploaded online, and most claims are honored, provided the relevant documents are present and in order.

5. Airlines cover me for delayed/late flights

Some airlines do, provided the reason for the said delay was reasonable.

This, however, might not apply to all airlines in the world and might have you out of money fast.

6. I’m in perfect health

You might be in perfect health now, but accidents often catch you off guard.

Better safe than sorry.

7. I can do it while I’m abroad

You can get insurance covers while you are traveling, but this is slightly more complicated.

Meeting an insurance agent and being fully informed about your cover will let you know of what is covered, how to make claims and other rights you are entitled to.

8. It’s a lot of paperwork

Obtain a travel insurance cover in today’s day and age is fast and painless.

You can obtain one in person, online or even over the phone.

9. It doesn’t cover pre-existing medical conditions

An increasing number of insurance companies are now offering covers for pre-existing medical conditions.

10. Medical costs are cheap in case I am sick

A cold on the road that requires little medication can be cheap to treat.

A more severe accident where you need to be airlifted and/or need a longer stay at a hospital under the supervision of specialized doctors, will not be.
